New geocaching website: opencaching.us
A new geocaching website went live this month. Opencaching.us is dedicated to having the members create a ‘database of quality, unique caches that are enjoyed, reviewed and rated by YOU, the geocaching community. If you are the owner of a new cache, we invite you to add it to our database. If you have a US cache listed on another site, we encourage you to relocate it to our servers’. This website also encourages the upload of virtual, webcam, and podcaches (This is a caches that uses a MP3 audio file to assist in finding the cache).
This website is attempting to return to the early days of geocaching, when there were not many rules for placement.
You can establish an account easily, and you can post caches that exist on other geocaching websites.

nüvi Battery PCB Recall
Garmin is voluntarily recalling certain nüvi devices that contain a specific battery that was manufactured by the battery supplier within a limited date code range. Garmin has identified potential overheating issues when certain batteries manufactured by the third-party battery supplier within a limited date code range are used in certain Garmin nüvi models with a specific printed circuit board (PCB) design. It appears that the interaction of these factors can, in rare circumstances, increase the possibility of overheating, which may lead to a fire hazard. Although there have been no injuries or significant property damage caused by this issue, Garmin is taking this action out of an abundance of caution.
The recalled devices include a small subset of the following nüvi model numbers:
- nüvi 200W, 250W, & 260W
- nüvi 7xx (where xx is a two-digit number)
You can determine your nüvi model number by looking at the label on the back or bottom of your nüvi.

Geocachers Save Two Women Stuck In Desert – Denver News Story – KMGH Denver
Joseph said they found the first geocache, then a second.
The area was muddy because of heavy rain, and Joseph said he and Fox even talked about not wanting to get stuck in the mud.
“We were going to turn around to look for a third geocache when we decided to drive on down to the river,” said Joseph.
“As we came over a hill, here’s this Dodge van,” said Joseph. “It had towels covering the windshield.”
“I’m telling Paul, ‘This doesn’t look right, but we’ve got to check it out,’” said Joseph.
Joseph said when he and Fox drove up to the van, a woman got out, said “Thank God,” and starting crying.

GC1BE91 International Space Station Traditional Cache in Kazakhstan created by Richard Garriott
one for your watch list
The International Space Station Geocache is literally “out of this world.” It orbits the earth at 17000 MPH at an altitude of 250 miles. This listing was published with permission from Groundspeak.I traveled to the ISS on October 12, 2008 becoming the first second generation astronaut. While there I created this geocache aboard the Russian Segment of the ISS. The cache itself is locker #218 as seen in the provided photograph. You will also see that attached a Travel Bug to the locker. I am hopeful that any future geocaching astronauts will start my Travel Bug on its way home, and leave one of their own in its place to start a similar journey. The International Space Station orbits about 250 miles above the earth and travels about 17000 miles per hour, completing an orbit of the earth every 90 minutes.
Today only the American Space Shuttle and Russian Soyuz vehicles can reach the ISS. This will be changing soon, not only is the shuttle retiring soon, but there is a fleet of private space vehicles coming soon, which will allow greater access to space and hopefully ultimately the space station. Thus, while today only about 500 people have made this journey, and I am sure I am not the only geocacher among them… many more will be reaching space soon, and I am hopeful to see many visitors in time.

I also know that “more consistent” isn’t the same as “more accurate”.
